Movie lookup through OMDb works by IMDb ID (the authoritative identifier for movies and TV shows on IMDb, in the format tt followed by digits) or by title text and year, returning a structured JSON response with comprehensive movie metadata. The IMDb ID lookup is highly reliable — if you already know the IMDb ID of a title, OMDb returns precisely that title's data without ambiguity. Title search with year specification handles most disambiguation needs for titles with common names.
IMDb ratings are among the most trusted movie quality signals globally, derived from voting by IMDb's large user base weighted toward regular voters with history. The OMDb response includes the IMDb rating value and vote count, as well as ratings from Rotten Tomatoes (critic consensus percentage) and Metacritic (weighted average critic score) where available.
