The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) is the central financial market infrastructure of Nigeria, responsible for managing the country's national payment clearing and settlement systems. Incorporated in 1993 and commencing operations in June 1994, NIBSS is jointly owned by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and all licensed Nigerian banks. It is the backbone upon which every bank transfer, USSD payment, POS transaction, and interbank settlement in Nigeria operates.

Best For

CBN-licensed Nigerian banks, microfinance banks, and regulated fintech companies (PSSP/PTSP licensees) that need direct access to Nigeria's national payment backbone — NIP instant transfers, BVN validation, direct debit mandates, and the Nigeria Central Switch — for building national-scale payment infrastructure.

Notes

NIBSS APIs are NOT for regular developers or startups — direct access requires a CBN license or NIBSS membership. Most startups access NIBSS services indirectly via licensed aggregators like Paystack, Flutterwave, or Interswitch. The certification process (Letter of Intent → document review → device testing → 24-month certificate) takes weeks to months. BVN validation is one of the most commonly accessed NIBSS services by licensed fintechs.
